DAY 17 - Old wood & four states

Today's journey continued west through Holbrook towards the Petrified Forest National Park. On the way we took a quick pitstop to explore one of the historic Route 66 Wigwam Motel sites, famous for their tee pee shaped motel rooms.

Continuing on to the Petrified Forest we were amazed at the size of some of these amazing fossils of an ancient marshy forest. The sheer number of visible petrified trees was quite stunning and exceeded our expectations. They dotted the entire landscape throughout the park where erosion had removed the layers of rock and sediment that kept them safe and buried.

We entered the park's western entrance and exited back onto Interstate 40 on the eastern side of the park after passing through the painted desert and touring the renovated Panted Desert Inn.

The second half of our day took us north through the Navajo Nation Reservation to the Four Corners National Monument which is maintained and operated by the Navajo people. It was pretty neat to stand (or lie down) in the only place in the country where four states all touch each other!

Finally we finished our day ascending Mesa Verde where we were able to spend the night at Far View Lodge and once again have Tesla Destination Charging available.
