Day 4's journey began in West Yellowstone, MT so we had to work our way back through Yellowstone National Park on our way to Grand Teton National Park. On the way we made a few stops to check out the Continental Divide and a few more thermal features at West Thumb Geyser Basin. These thermal features submerged on the shoreline of Yellowstone Lake make you wonder just how many there are out there.
The bulk of our day was spent exploring Grand Teton National Park. Our hike near Jackson Lake in Colter Bay was cut a little short when we discovered some fresh bear dung. Our adventurous take-no-prisoners spirit quickly changed to a take-no-chances spirit! We enjoyed some amazing views from atop Signal Mountain and learned some fun history while exploring Menors Ferry Historical District.
We originally intended to stay at The Lexington at Jackson Hole (because they have Tesla charging) but arrived to the entire valley being without power. After a nice walk around downtown Jackson we realized that along with not being able to charge we were not going to find a restaurant to have dinner as no one had power. As you can imagine, a power outage provides a unique challenge when driving an electric vehicle!
With enough range to reach Idaho Falls, ID we decided to check out and head for a more Tesla friendly destination (one with power) and we learned some very important Yellowstone/Grand Teton lessons and important travel tips!
We arrived at the Tesla Supercharger in Idaho Falls at 9pm to discover two important things: (1) that everything in Idaho seems to close at 8 or 9pm including restaurants and (2) that every hotel within 250 miles of the National Parks is sold out due to people traveling to or from the National Parks. After charging we ended up making our way to Twin Falls, ID (the direction we were heading in the morning anyways) and finding a soft bed at a Comfort Inn & Suites by midnight.
